The pancreas increases the amount of insulin it produces but eventually it cannot produce enough. Some of the risks factors are obesity, inactivity, heredity and increasing age. Race can also be a risk factor. Type 2 diabetes may be treated with diet, exercising regularly and controlling blood pressure as well as cholesterol. When medication is necessary there are many oral medications or insulin. There has been much research in the treatment of diabetes recently.

Type 1 diabetes is when the body’s immune system has destroyed the insulin producing cells in the pancreas. The pancreas is the organ that produces insulin. About 5-10% of diabetics are type 1. This type has been called juvenile diabetes because it shows up from childhood to young adulthood. The treatment for type 1 diabetes may include multiple injection of insulin and weight control. Healthy eating, exercising, blood pressure control and cholesterol control are also important.
